Fear Blog

Examine the situation.

This is what I asked you to do in the beginning of this assignment. What is fear, etc.?
Fear is a response to a perceived threat that is a necessary adaptation for survival as well as an integral part or the fight or flight response.

Formulate an experiment.

Play with the idea of fear and come up with an idea for something you can create (or do) that explores your thoughts on this idea.
I have already understood and faced my main fear for quite some time. I have the same fear which actually lies somewhere in between the distinction of fear and anxiety for almost my entire life. I will revisit my largest initial bout in facing the fear, a visit to an old folks home.

Hypothesize the expected outcome.

How do you think people (your classmates) will react to what you came up with?

I expect that people will see my fear as a fairly understandable anxiety. As my fear is one or reasoning and it is not an acute fear but a dull and long lasting one my arguments rationalizing the anxiety may pass well into understanding by other people in the class. Past family relationships that each student has had will play a roll in how they interpret the subject.

Conduct the experiment.
Share/present what you came up with in class.
I gave a rundown of the attached presentation in class.

Observe the reaction.
Take notes of how people actually did respond to your creation (or whatever it was) in class. Somehow document your findings so you can refer to them later.

I feel that some people thought the fear was understandable, but didn’t speak up or comment. I did notice some understanding looks and nodding from certain members of the class, however there were some that might have thought the subject matter was crass. I have a take it or leave it presentation style that might have gotten the disapproving reactions so it is hard to say if it directly related to the fear itself.

Analysis of hypothesis with actual outcome.
Compare your notes on the actual reaction you got from your class mates (and me) with what you expected would happen.

I feel that my hypothesis followed the reactions rather closely except for the disapproval of my presentation style I mentioned above.

Propose changes to your idea based on what happened.

I could propose some style changes in the delivery of my fear as I mentioned above, but if it is about me then whatever way I present personal subject matter should be correct. The only other thing of my fear presentation I would change would be adding some video as it might have helped grab people’s attention more and therefore made people more open to the validity of my fear.

Then discuss the experience/presentation from class which you responded to most strongly, be it yours or someone else's. Answer these questions on your blog.
What was it and who did it?
Why did you respond to it so strongly?
How does it impact how you see your own project?

I didn’t feel strongly about anyone else’s, they were sometimes understandable, but my only fear is my own. I did feel that some presentation methods were interesting, and that made me think about making my own project less static.

Bliss Blog

For the blog assignment we were supposed to do something we wanted and not necessarily share what it was but show reflections on it. As I usually do the assignment after a glance then read the specifics after it is done (as indicative of what I discovered) I generally have some tweaking to do at the end of the assignment, but with this one time it actually helped me. I felt that because I did what I would have guessed the assignment to be and then reflected on it I got what it more truthfully meant. We weren't forced to share, but what I did for my bliss assignment was look for a motorcycle online, drive an hour each way to see it, and bought it when I was there. I reflected that I like to do things impulsively and with the 3 hour time frame I realized that I rarely do any one thing for a three hour span. Even when I watch a movie it is rarely so long and I usually get disinterested with anything else during that kind of time span. The second part of the assignment was to watch a video and then relate a stuffed animal to it. THe video was largely about trying to get out of your own head in the creative process and let it happen organically, since I was proven impulsive anyways I thought about how my actions with a stuffed animal applied to what I learned from the bliss project. I thought back to the one stuffed animal I had ever had and saw how what happened with it applied to what I had seen during the bliss assignment. The one stuffed animal that I can actually recall having I won. My mom had been doing something at a bank and there was a table with entry forms for a raffle contest. The contest said that you could enter as many times as you wanted so the entire time I was waiting at the bank I filled out the raffle forms. Long after I had forgotten that I had ever signed up for a raffle my house was called to say that I had won a prize. I was disappointed when I found out it was a four foot tall plush bugs bunny. Being a rough and tumble boy (and the plushie having a metal spine)  I decided to use it as a dummy to practice the karate I was taking, shoot arrows at, and hit with sticks. I soon had turned the rabbit to tatters and broke the metal frame that was its spine. A couple of weeks later a Warner Brothers catalogue arrived at the house and I flipped through it, the stuffed toy was in the catalogue and behold it was worth four hundred dollars as it was a special anniversary edition toy. I saw from even then that I was energetic and impulsive. i was mad about the toy for about a day, but then I got over it and realized I had fun with it. The motorcycle has cost some money and I am having to put extra into the impulsive decision, but when it gets warm I hope to have fun with it. Hopefully I have gotten a little less destructive on the way.

Don Erickson

Being a fan of architecture and therefore naturally a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright I have on occasion gone out of my way to see one of his buildings. I've traveled the short trip when living in Chicago to see the home he built in Oak Park Illinois to the farther trip of going to Falling Water in Pennsylvania. When the occasion arrived to visit a friend who recently moved to Elgin Illinois I caught wind that there was a nice golf course in the area attached to a resort that was designed by Wright. It was a quick drive over there from my friend's new residence so I stayed at the resort. I asked the staff some questions like who designed the golf course and if the resort was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, most of the staff was either clueless (not one knew who designed the golf course) or they told me that Wright was the architect. From the form of the building I thought I saw traces of Wright's work but the resort was pretty much the strangest thing that I have seen of his work. Walking around the resort I found a small plaque on a wall that attributed the building to the actual architect, Don Erickson. Even on the plaque commemorating his own design of the building Don Erickson's connection to Wright was mentioned, he was his apprentice. Erickson was a swedish descended architect who was so in Wright's shadow that I never heard of him even after reading several things about Wright and seemingly any mention of him ever made connects him to Wright. I had almost been positive that when I booked the room on the website it had made reference to Frank Lloyd Wright being the architect of the build so I was going back to the resort's website to see what was said. The  resort's website mentions Frank Lloyd Wright "inspired" architecture. Poor Don, here was a guy who designed something over 20 years after an apprenticeship that he never even truly completed and his work is still "inspired" by someone else. I guess it is fair after seeing the resort he built, it was just like seeing a stranger and less nicely designed version of a Wright piece. Attached is a picture of a skylight in the building that I thought had Wright influences and the wording on the Indian Lakes Resort website that tries its best to legally make a connection to a famous architect that had no part in actually making the building.

Field Trip

I think the field trip was overall pretty informative. The information on youtube videos and google analytics  was interesting and informative, it is generally hard to translate anything like video posts into a career or income. Some of the equipment that the school had was cool to see, but it did seem hard to get access to it and the amount of money spent for equipment that no one was using at 3:30pm on a weekday made me question some of the cutbacks the school has made.
